Reclaiming Dreams

Laura had always been a caregiver. Since becoming a single mother at 18, she dedicated herself to raising her child while balancing work and pursuing an education at Weatherford College. However, without a strong support system, her dreams took a backseat to her family’s immediate needs. She entered an unhealthy relationship that controlled her life, and though she had two more children, things felt hopeless.
By 2020, Laura, now in her late-40s, was in a new relationship and excited for the future in their new home. However, her life was disrupted when two of her adult daughters, each facing relationship struggles, had to move in with her. The financial strain worsened during the pandemic—her husband was forced into early retirement and had to take a low-paying job, while Laura’s health issues led her to leave her job. Bankruptcy soon followed along with the uncertainty of their future.
Laura knew about Center of Hope because she had previously brought her sister for assistance, never imagining she’d need it herself. She was now caring for her grandchildren and further losing her sense of self. Seeking help from Center of Hope became a turning point.
She received food, which eased some burdens, and when she learned about Center of Hope’s free childcare, she saw a chance to do something for herself. Laura enrolled in computer classes and Jobs for Life. The classes challenged her in ways she hadn’t expected, pushing her out of her comfort zone and asking her to reflect on her own worth. Through the guidance and support of Center of Hope, she recognized the importance of self-love and faith and her relationship with God deepened. “I don’t know what I would have done without Center of Hope,” Laura said. Her outlook has forever been changed. No longer feeling lost or powerless, she has set her sights on returning to Weatherford College after almost 30 years. With renewed determination and faith, she is ready to reclaim the dreams she once put on hold, confident that the best chapters of her story are yet to come.
