New Ministry Brings Spiritual Support to Center of Hope

When retired pastor Van N. Houser first spoke with Center of Hope’s CEO, Staci Markwardt, about the idea of launching a volunteer chaplain program, her response was enthusiastic—and the spark of a new ministry was lit. Van and fellow North Side Baptist Church retiree Burton Cook soon reached out to other retired ministers, gathering those with a heart to serve. In just a few weeks, the first group of volunteer chaplains were trained, oriented, and ready to serve—one chaplain available each day to simply be present for our guests.
The chaplains at Center of Hope focus on one-on-one conversations that take time—listening, praying, and offering encouragement rooted in God’s Word. You’ll often find them greeting guests in the dining room or lobby when doors open each morning. They sit alongside those who are open to conversation to learn their story. They do not offer new solutions to their needs, except to point them to uplifting scripture or a new action plan. Occasionally, a private consultation is requested, so they use an empty office to meet with participants. The chaplains seek to create a positive atmosphere as we care for people and show them there is real hope in Jesus!
The chaplains are a living reminder that hope is not only found in practical help—but also in prayer, presence, and the quiet assurance that none of us walk alone. With more volunteers, they could offer chaplain support in rotating shifts throughout the day. To serve as a volunteer chaplain, contact Burton at bcookjr2@gmail.com.
