Overcoming Adversity: A Journey of Faith & Support at Center of Hope

Dennis grew up learning the value of hard work, assisting his father with drilling and dynamite work. When circumstances forced a career change, he earned a degree and entered the tech industry, installing computer networks. This career brought him financial stability and a life to be proud of—until 2006, when a cancer diagnosis changed everything.

The years following his diagnosis were filled with countless surgeries, uncertainty, and a departure from the career he had built. Unable to work, Dennis was forced to rely on disability payments, which barely covered his living expenses. Eventually, he spent 18 months living in his truck, a far cry from the life he once knew. But in his darkest hour, hope appeared.

A timely conversation with a friend introduced Dennis to Center of Hope. During their chat, he learned about the free meals provided by the Center. His initial reaction was to dismiss the idea, thinking he wouldn’t “qualify” for the meals. However, as he reflected, reality set in, and he realized he needed the support.

Dennis took his friend’s advice and came for a meal. It wasn’t long before one meal turned into many and he found himself in a community where he felt supported and cared for. Center of Hope began to help him with financial assistance for transportation to MD Anderson for treatments. He was also connected with the Weatherford Housing Authority to find better solutions for his housing.

Looking back, Dennis says, “The best thing about Center of Hope is that when I walk in the front door, they know my name. I know it is a place where they never stop praying for me. I feel abundantly blessed.” While cancer took much from Dennis, he gained an incredible support system that continues to lift him through his struggles.

Dennis’s story is a testament to the profound impact that donors can have in transforming lives. While cancer took much from him, the unwavering support he received through Center of Hope—made possible by the kindness of others—has restored his hope and strength. Every meal, every ride to treatment, every prayer whispered is a reminder that when a community comes together, no one has to face hardship alone.
