Rising Above: Alex and Mia’s Journey from Hardship to Triumph
Alex and his younger sister, Mia, lived a life far removed from the dreams they once had as children. Abandoned by their parents during their teenage years and left without guidance, school quickly fell by the wayside. Years later, they found themselves with no high school diploma, no job, no home, and seemingly no way out.
Seeing her niece and nephew struggle, their aunt, Andrea, stepped in and brought them to Center of Hope. It was here that they received food assistance, offering much-needed relief. Since the Center was within walking distance of Andrea’s house, Alex and Mia could visit regularly. It was during one of these visits that they met a life coach who introduced them to the Jobs for Life class—a course that became a turning point for them both. The class gave them a sense of purpose and direction, and by the time it ended, they knew their next step would be to earn their high school diplomas.
Alex seized the opportunity, progressing swiftly through tutoring sessions, and within a few months, he was ready to take the GED exam. Mia, however, faced a more difficult road. She had always struggled academically, and the years of neglect had eroded her self-esteem. Despite this, Mia persevered. For two years, she attended tutoring sessions, studied diligently, and overcame numerous obstacles. Her unwavering determination paid off, and she, too, was able to pass the GED exam.
Today, Alex and Mia serve as a true inspiration to many at Center of Hope. Once unsure of their abilities, their resilience and determination to transform their lives now stand as a powerful testament to others facing similar challenges.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
